Study from distillers’ association shows industry’s impact on economy

According to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, the bourbon industry has resulted in $8.6 billion added to the state’s yearly economy, generating more than 20,000 jobs and $235 million in local and state tax revenue. Locally, Wilderness Trail Distillery definitely has contributed to those numbers. Co-owner Shane Baker said when he and Pat Heist began Ferm Solutions 13 years ago — providing research, product development, engineering and technical services to the ethanol and distilled spirit industries — they had meetings in a hallway, with three employees. After Wilderness Trail Distillery set up shop, now Luca Mariano Distillery is next in line. It’s owner, Francesco Viola, said he has a 12-year plan that involves between $20 million and $50 million of investment in a 240-acre property, involving restoration of the historic William Crow House to serve as a visitors center, rickhouses, a bottling facility, a restaurant and cabins for overnight visits. KDA says the number of distilleries in Kentucky has more than tripled to 68 in the last decade.

Drinking stories: The man behind Danville’s newest distillery project shares his vision for 240-acre farm

Boyle County has attracted another distillery project, but approval of state incentives and a zone change are still needed to solidify the plans. A bright red sign along Ky. 52 on the eastern outskirts of Danville now announces the plans for Luca Mariano Distillery. Francesco Viola, owner of the brand, said he has a 12-year plan that involves between $20 million and $50 million of investment in the 240-acre property. The plan involves restoring the historic William Crow House that still stands on the farm to make it a visitors center, as well as rickhouses for storing whiskey barrels, a bottling facility, even a restaurant and cabins for overnight visits. “Those are the things we’ll be focusing on first,” Viola said, explaining he has already been distilling and aging Luca Mariano bourbon and rye whiskeys at Wilderness Trail Distillery on the other side of Danville, and intends to continue using that distillery for quite some time. Viola hosted a private party on the property Saturday to announce his plans, featuring live music, a bounce house for kids, Wilderness Trail bourbon and a whole hog roast by local BBQ expert Mike Southerland. But there’s a caveat to the announcement, said Dan Campbell, the real estate agent who finalized the property purchase in 2017 and represents Viola and Luca Mariano Distillery locally.

William Crow House was built in 1783

The William Crow House, the first stone house built in this area before Kentucky became a state in 1792, sits at the end of a lane off Lancaster Road. It was built around 1783. The house is reportedly the only house in Kentucky erected by an original James Harrod pioneer and as the county lines changed, it has been located in three counties, Lincoln, Mercer and Boyle. William was the son of John Crow, the founder of Danville. Both were members of the Harrod band of permanent settlers of 1774 and both were granted land by the Virginia Land Court because of their settlements. The Crow property has had many owners over the years and the house is currently being renovated and used as part of a new distillery.
